One of the lowest crime weeks in 2024

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) – The Missoula County District Attorney's Office filed 17 new criminal charges this week, 12 fewer than last week. According to Assistant District Attorney Mac Bloom, this was one of our lowest crime weeks of the year.

“Eight of the crimes were violent crimes against persons,” Bloom said. “If you break it down further, five of those violent crimes were family violence/strangulation and three were non-family robberies. We had four endangerment crimes, two property crimes, two drug crimes and one administrative offense.”

Bloom said 14 of the cases this week were pretrial detention cases, while the rest were out-of-custody cases.

“When someone is arrested for a crime, the prosecutor has 48 hours to file charges or the person is released,” Bloom said. “So once someone is taken into custody, the clock is ticking very quickly. We have two attorneys every morning looking at the detainees' cases and working to get them filed within that 48-hour time frame.”

Bloom was asked if there were any changes in the crime rate after the major storm that hit Missoula a few weeks ago.

“I haven't noticed any major changes and definitely no crimes related to people looting other people's homes and taking advantage of the situation,” Bloom said. “So that was good. I think the storm really brought Missoula together and that's a positive thing to look at because our office didn't seem to be affected by it.”

The Missoula County District Attorney's Office releases a weekly crime report on Talk Back every Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. You can listen to Bloom's full report below:
