A Californian mother dog was bitten to death by dogs on August 8. 25 Great Danes were found running around freely not far from the scene of the incident.

Davina Corbin, 56, was found dead on the Blackhawk Trail in Feather Falls, Calif., around 1:58 a.m., according to the Butte County Sheriff's Office. She is believed to have been walking in the area when she was attacked, authorities say.

The autopsy revealed “numerous bite marks and injuries” on Corbin's body, leading the coroner to believe the cause of death was a dog attack.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for a home on Blackhawk Trail and found 25 Great Danes “running loose.” Officers and detectives “spent the entire day trying to capture the dogs.”

As of August 10, 23 of the dogs had been captured and placed in the care of animal control. Upon further testing, it was found that DNA found on Corbin's clothing matched that of domestic dogs.

PEOPLE reached out to the Butte County Sheriff's Office on August 16 and did not receive an immediate response.

Local news station KCRA reported on August 15 that seven of the dogs – all adult Great Danes – believed to be involved in Corbin's death will be euthanized.

According to the Butte County Health Department, the 18 Great Dane puppies will be put up for adoption. No charges have been filed in connection with Corbin's death.

Feather Falls resident Max Hecker told KCRA about the Great Danes and admitted that he and his neighbors have complained about the dogs in the past.

“Nothing has been done about it so far,” he said. “Wait until someone gets killed by these dogs. This is a tragedy that should never have happened.”

The Corbin family set up a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses. “Our mother, Davina Corbin, 56, of Feather Falls, California, was tragically taken from us on August 8, 2024 after being attacked by dogs,” it reads.

“We are finding it difficult to cope with this loss and need help saying goodbye.”
