Schenectady man pleads guilty to attempted murder in September 2023

A Schenectady man entered a guilty plea on Thursday, August 15, 2024, to attempted murder in a September 2023 shooting.

Deonte Dent, 24, of Schenectady, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder Thursday morning in Albany County Superior Court before the Honorable Roger McDonough.

According to the Albany County District Attorney's Office, Dent's indictment alleges that on or about September 10, 2023, he attempted to cause the death of another person by shooting them with an “illegal, loaded” firearm in the area of ​​Quail and Bradford St., Albany.

The indictment also states that on or about January 14, 2024, Dent possessed an illegal loaded firearm in the area of ​​North Manning Blvd. in Albany and on or about January 15, 2024, he knowingly and unlawfully introduced dangerous contraband into the Albany County Correctional Facility.

According to prosecutors, Dent's confession satisfies the charges, including two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and one count of first-degree promoting prison contraband.

His sentencing is scheduled for October 4, 2024. He faces a minimum sentence of 8 years and a maximum of 12 years in state prison, followed by 5 years of probation upon release.
