1 dead after tractor-trailer accident in Blandford

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) — At around 9:45 a.m. Friday, State Police-Westfield troopers were dispatched to a crash where a semi-truck struck the guardrail on Route 90 eastbound in Blandford.

While en route to this accident, troopers were notified that a pedestrian had been struck by a second semi-truck on westbound Route 90 in the same area. When they arrived, they discovered a man lying in the westbound lanes who had been struck by the second semi-truck and who died of his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the first tractor-trailer was identified as Nicholas Charles, 36, of Mechanicville, NY, who struck the guardrail.

After stopping, he attempted to access the westbound lanes on foot to retrieve an object that had become detached from his vehicle during the first crash. While attempting to retrieve the object, he was struck by another semi-trailer driven by a 69-year-old man from Ontario, Canada.

The exact cause and circumstances of the accident are still being investigated by State Police-Westfield, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services and detectives from the Hampden County District Attorney's Office. Officers were on scene until approximately 2 p.m. investigating the accident. The left eastbound lanes and the right and center westbound lanes were closed.
