Replacing Matt Milano is proof of his biggest progress with the Bills

As is almost always the case, the rookie season was a necessary learning experience for Buffalo Bills linebacker Dorian Williams.

Selected 91st overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, the promising prospect hasn't missed a single game, playing just 20 percent of defensive snaps while learning the intricacies of being a pro linebacker. Entering his sophomore year, Williams has reportedly improved in one key aspect of the game.

“I just understand everything about defense and what the offense is trying to do to us. That's where you have to take the biggest step in the NFL, which is learning the finer points,” Williams said after Thursday's joint practice against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Following the injury news of Matt Milano, the Bills now need Williams to perform on the field. Milano suffered a torn bicep earlier this week and won't be able to play until late November at the earliest. That means Williams will likely step into the starting lineup as a sophomore.

“I feel ready. We came here to be the next man up and make our 11th contribution,” Williams said.

Williams, 23, has already sought advice from the injured Milano, who has performed at an elite level since joining the team in 2017.

“Keep an eye on your keys. That's what he always told me. It makes everything easier when you keep an eye on your keys and then everything falls into place,” Williams said.

Although a little earlier than expected, Williams has an incredible opportunity and the Bills need to ask him to take it.
