Groundbreaking ceremony for new $83 million prison facility begins

Anderson County is now one step closer to a state-of-the-art jail. Today, county leaders met for a groundbreaking ceremony. The new jail will be located at the corner of Matthew Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard, next to the current jail. The new jail will be able to house 650 inmates and provide a safe environment for inmates and staff. According to county leaders, the project will cost $83 million. “We're not here to turn this into a bed and breakfast for inmates. In fact, if you paid for breakfast, you would want your money back. So it's designed to create space, house more people, and hopefully keep people who need to stay in jail in jail longer,” said Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride. County leaders say the jail is scheduled to be completed by December 2026.
