Gas leak on stove leads to closure of Buckeye High School

A gas leak from a stove forced Buckeye High School to cancel classes for the rest of the day, officials said.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, the Buckeye Fire Medical Rescue Division, along with hazardous materials units from various fire departments in the Valley, arrived at the scene and found gas concentrations in two buildings, accompanied by a “strong odor of gas.”

The school was evacuated shortly afterwards while firefighters and South West Gas worked to contain the leak.

According to the authorities, the leak has now been secured and no longer poses a danger.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported so far. The school is expected to reopen on Monday, authorities said.

This is the second incident in two days at a Buckeye school. On Wednesday, a faulty air conditioning motor sparked a small fire at Sundance Elementary School, causing a modular classroom to fill with smoke. No injuries were reported in the incident.
