DNR Pocket Park offers kids fishing, shooting and more during UP State Fair

ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) – Families visiting the UP State Fair this weekend can also stop by the Michigan DNR Pocket Park for a respite from the hustle and bustle of the fair.

The park offers activities for children ages three and up, including shooting an air rifle or bow and arrow, and fishing in a pond with nearly 1,800 sunfish.

DNR volunteers are on site to teach first-time anglers how to hook a worm and cast a line.

“I love our fishing lake. As the only female fishing guide in our Upper Peninsula, it is my great joy to teach and impart knowledge that is near and dear to my heart,” said DNR employee Melissa Erny.

Special guests on Saturday include the UP Children's Museum and Smokey the Bear.

The park opens at 11:30 am and closes at 7 pm. On Sundays it opens at 12 pm and closes at 3 pm.

After the fair ends, the park is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Labor Day.
