Death investigation at Clayton County Detention Center on Friday

​Perez Denis Martinez died Friday after losing consciousness and hitting his head on Tuesday. The sheriff believes no foul play was involved.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Georgia – An inmate at the Clayton County Jail died Friday after a medical emergency, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Perez Denis Martinez died Friday after fainting and hitting his head on Tuesday.

The sheriff's office added the same day that officers conducted a psychological evaluation after noticing that Martinez was refusing to eat.

On Thursday, Martinez suffered another medical emergency after losing consciousness and hitting his head again. He was then taken to the infirmary for observation. The sheriff's office said that after making rounds in the infirmary, a deputy was notified that Martinez had lost consciousness and fallen.

Martinez was taken to Southern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced deceased due to medical complications.

The Clayton County Coroner's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigations have been notified.

According to the sheriff's office, the investigation revealed no evidence of foul play and the sheriff stated that it was a medical emergency.

Martinez was booked into the Clayton County Jail on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty, with bail set at $4,000, the sheriff's office added.
