Woman allegedly forged check for $25,000

JONESBORO, Arkansas (KAIT) – Police have arrested a Jonesboro woman after she allegedly forged a $25,000 check.

On Friday, August 16, Craighead County District Court Judge Tommy Fowler found there was probable cause to charge 29-year-old Alexus Gaston with first-degree forgery, a Class B felony.

According to the affidavit, on Friday, July 19, Gaston went to a bank on East Highland Drive and deposited a U.S. Treasury check. The check was made out to $25,733.27 and was deposited into Gaston's personal account.

“Alexus then began withdrawing funds totaling $5,426.34 before the bank received the returned check from the U.S. Treasury Department indicating that it was a counterfeit check,” the affidavit states.

Police said the name on the check had been washed off and Gaston's name was printed on it. They also said there was surveillance video of the transaction.

On Thursday, August 15, Gaston went to the Jonesboro Police Department for questioning, where she admitted to receiving the check, taking it to the bank, withdrawing the $5,426.34, giving half of it to the suspect and using the other half for rent money.

Gaston was arrested and taken to the Craighead County Detention Center where she is being held on $25,000 cash bail.

Her next court date is scheduled for Friday, September 27.
