Louisville man appears in court over fatal weekend shooting

According to the indictment against Richie William, he is accused of shooting 29-year-old Montay Wade on Baxter Avenue.

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – The man accused of shooting a man in the fatal shooting in Original Highlands appeared in court Friday.

37-year-old Richie Williams is accused of murder and illegal possession of a handgun.

He is accused of the fatal shooting that occurred in the 900 block of Baxter Avenue.

Both 20-year-old Michael Bachelor Jr. and 29-year-old Montay Wade were killed that night and one other person was injured.

According to Williams' arrest warrant, he is accused of shooting Wade on Baxter Avenue.

LMPD said an off-duty officer heard gunshots and saw Williams running from the scene with a gun.

Police said Williams was being treated at the hospital for a gunshot wound, at which point the off-duty officer was reportedly able to identify him based on the clothing he was wearing.

Council member Ben Reno-Weber, whose district includes much of the Highlands, called the incident a targeted attack.

“No one in our community should be afraid, and we must continue to demand the resources, enforce and fight to make our neighbors feel safe,” he said.

Williams pleaded not guilty in court Friday morning. His bail was set at $500,000.

Police said Bachelor's death is still under investigation. Bachelor was shot around the corner on Morton Avenue, around the same time the shooting occurred on Baxter Avenue.
