According to a press release from the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office, a correctional officer at the Hubbard County Jail was allegedly attacked by an inmate.

The press release states that at 5:30 p.m. on August 7, the correctional officer was sitting at a desk monitoring inmates in a housing unit when 23-year-old Cole Pigeon of Bayport, Minnesota, left his cell and attacked the officer.

Pigeon allegedly stabbed the officer multiple times with a sharp piece of metal commonly known as a “shank,” causing cuts to the officer's head and face. The officer was able to fight off his attacker long enough before another correctional officer arrived on the scene.

An investigation revealed that Pigeon had fashioned the weapon from a holder he had removed from a table in the recreation room. Pigeon stated that he had stalked the officer before stabbing him and that he would stab more officers at any opportunity. He also stated that the officers had committed to doing so.

Pigeon was in the Hubbard County Jail on charges of aggravated criminal damage and assault on a police officer. His new charges include first-, second-, third- and fourth-degree assault.

The correctional officer was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids where he was treated for stab wounds.
