Corsicana ISD assistant principal recovering after classroom disruption injury – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Just one week into the new year, students and staff at Corsicana ISD's Collins Intermediate School are shocked.

“Yesterday there was a disruption in class that escalated,” said district spokesman Raymond Linex.

Linex said Assistant Principal Candra Rogers is recovering after being flown by helicopter to a hospital on Thursday because she was injured by a student.

“She simply tried to intervene yesterday and from then on the situation escalated,” he said.

While Rogers remained in the hospital Friday, neighbors gathered in front of the school to pray at a vigil organized by former board member Barbara Kelley.

“Right now we just have to heal and help make it better,” Kelley said.

Kelley says the community celebrated when Corsicana native Eugene Rogers returned as head football coach last year.

Now they support his wife Candra, who has also become an integral part of their community.

“We were all hurt and devastated because I know the reason they came back. They didn't have to come back, you know, but they came back because they wanted to help our young people, you know, help the program, and that's why it was just so hurtful,” she said.

The Navarro County District Attorney said Friday that the student in question had been released to his parents following a hearing.

Because the student is a minor, prosecutors said no further details about possible charges would be released.

The district had previously stated that the student had been arrested and charges had been filed.

As for Rogers, Linex said she is making progress.

“Her condition is improving. She is in good spirits. She is very strong,” he said.

According to her neighbors, she also has the support of a strong community.

“Ultimately, we have to take responsibility. We have to say, OK, what are we going to do to make it better? What are we going to do to make it better?” Kelley said.
