Massachusetts man faces felony charges after Rumford crash that killed his son

A Massachusetts man has been indicted by an Oxford County grand jury on 16 counts in connection with a fatal crash in Rumford in March. Rumford police made the announcement after presenting the results of their investigation to the grand jury on Friday. Matthew Kellogg, 42, of Hopedale, Massachusetts, is accused of driving his Subaru Impreza while intoxicated on the afternoon of March 9. Police said his two children, boys ages 6 and 9, were also in the vehicle. At about 3:15 p.m., Kellogg was driving eastbound on Route 2 in Rumford when he allegedly swerved across the center line of the road into the path of a Volvo driven by F. Michael Piveronas, 61, of Rumford. Piveronas was alone in his car, according to officials, and was unable to avoid Kellogg's car before the Subaru collided “violently head-on” with the Volvo at a high rate of speed. Police reportedly found all four with “serious, life-threatening injuries.” The 9-year-old boy was found unconscious at the scene of the crash, but did not survive despite the efforts of a nurse and game warden on the scene. Piveronas, Kellogg, and Kellogg's 6-year-old son were all treated and later released from their respective hospitals. Kellogg's blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. Officers reportedly discovered several opened and unopened bottles in his vehicle. Police determined Piveronas was not under the influence of any substances, and no defects were found in either the Volvo or Subaru that may have contributed to the crash. Kellogg is now charged with: one count of manslaughter, four counts of aggravated assault, three counts of driving under the influence, three counts of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Kellogg, who has not yet been arrested, will turn himself in to police in Maine. No date has been set for his arraignment in Oxford County Superior Court in South Paris.

A Massachusetts man has been indicted by an Oxford County grand jury on 16 counts in connection with a fatal car crash in Rumford in March.

Rumford police made the announcement after presenting the results of their investigation to the grand jury on Friday.

Matthew Kellogg, 42, of Hopedale, Massachusetts, is suspected of driving his Subaru Impreza while drunk on the afternoon of March 9. Police said his two children, boys ages 6 and 9, were also in the vehicle.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., Kellogg was driving eastbound on Route 2 in Rumford when he allegedly crossed the center line of the road and drove directly in front of a Volvo driven by F. Michael Piveronas, 61, of Rumford.

According to officials, Piveronas was alone in his car and was unable to avoid Kellogg's car before the Subaru collided “violently head-on” with the Volvo at high speed.

Police found all four with “serious, life-threatening injuries.” The 9-year-old boy was found unconscious at the scene of the accident but did not survive, despite the efforts of a nurse and a game warden on site.

Piverona, Kellogg and Kellogg's six-year-old son were all treated and later released from their respective hospitals.

Kellogg's blood alcohol level was over the legal limit. Officers reportedly discovered several opened and unopened bottles in his vehicle.

Police determined that Piveronas was not under the influence of any drugs. Nor were any defects found in the Volvo or the Subaru that could have contributed to the accident.

Kellogg is now accused of:

  • a case of manslaughter
  • four cases of serious bodily harm
  • three cases of serious driving impairment
  • three counts of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon
  • three cases of endangering road traffic
  • two cases of endangering the welfare of a child

Kellogg, who has not yet been arrested, will turn himself in to police in Maine. No date has been set for his arraignment in Oxford County Superior Court in South Paris.
