Passersby who recorded a stranger's marriage proposal go viral with their comments

When Nicole Cochrane's fiancé made her a surprise marriage proposal, Cochrane couldn't have imagined how many people would cheer her on online and in the sand next to her.

Cochrane, 28, is a content creator and works in marketing. She and her fiancée Taylor Symmank, 31, have been together for nearly three years after meeting on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend.

On April 26, Cochrane visited Rosemary Beach, supposedly for a girls' trip with her best friend.

“My best friend is a wedding photographer, so it’s only natural that she would ask me to accompany her on a weekend trip since she normally does weddings all over the world,” says Cochrane.

Cochrane and her friend often do impromptu photo shoots — “We always take photos together, it's a girl thing” — so she wasn't surprised when her friend started taking photos of her during an evening stroll on the beach.

“When we got there, she was cool, calm and relaxed, but I could tell something was bothering her,” Cochrane recalls.

To her right, Cochrane noticed a large family group sitting around a campfire.

She had no idea that they had discovered Symmank waiting patiently for her on the beach – or that they were filming the moment with their cell phones.

“This is the cutest thing ever,” said one of the women in the background of the video.

“Should we cheer?” asked one. “We’ll cheer afterwards,” answered another.

“I have chills all over my body,” cried one woman.

Cochrane had noticed the women watching her, but she didn't realize what was going on until she saw Symmank standing on the beach surrounded by roses.

“I turned around to the people and heard them cheering, so to speak, but then I just didn't hear anything anymore because I felt like I had fainted.”

When Cochrane and Symmank finally embraced, the crowd of onlookers cheered and clapped in approval before offering to AirDrop the footage to Cochrane.

“They were just incredible, just so, so kind,” says Cochrane. “When I listened to the video the next day and heard their comment, I just thought: This can't be true.”

The comment on the video received an equally enthusiastic response on TikTok.

“Your comment makes the moment even more beautiful,” wrote jeans brand Wrangler in a comment.

“That's girl life,” skincare brand Kiehl's commented on the post with a heart and a happy crying emoji.

Cochrane agreed: “That’s how it felt at the time.”

“The beautiful thing about the video is that it shows people supporting other people,” she says. “It's just such a beautiful moment.”

Although Cochrane and the women did not exchange contact information, they saw the video when Cochrane posted it on Instagram.

Now the women plan to meet again on the same beach.

“We actually want to go back to Rosemary Beach and see her,” says Cochrane.

The couple's wedding is planned for November 22nd and they are considering inviting the women who filmed their proposal.

“That's not decided yet,” she says. “I don't want to make them feel like, 'Oh my God, I have to come to this wedding,' but it would be so much fun. If they wanted to come, we would love it.”
