Woman arrested after fire in Grass Valley

A woman was arrested in connection with a vegetation fire that spread to and destroyed a Nevada County business Friday afternoon. Multiple fire departments responded to the Nevada Fire, which was burning in the area of ​​Nevada City Highway and Highway 49, just after 3:30 p.m. Cal Fire said firefighters stopped the fire's advance at 4:50 p.m. Footage from LiveCopter 3 showed dark smoke rising from Sierra Motor Sports in the fire area. Officials told KCRA 3 the family-owned business was a total loss. Grass Valley police said officers arrested a woman in connection with the incident, but details of how the fire started are still under investigation. Officials identified the woman arrested as Elizabeth Huston of Nevada County. She was booked into Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on charges of arson of an occupied structure. Prison officials confirm Huston was released from prison just a few days earlier. She was arrested on Aug. 13 for auto theft and released the next day. “This was a difficult crime scene,” Grass Valley police said in a Facebook post. “The repair shop at the business housed old fuel and a number of flammable materials used in repairs.” KCRA 3 spoke to longtime customers of the shop. They said they are devastated for the owners. “There's no other motorcycle shop in town, you know, this is our shop. This is our mom and pop shop,” Kyle Perry said. “Every day when I walk through the door, mom and dad are sitting at their desk. Their black Lab is sitting there on the floor, and when I walk in, they greet me like I'm family.” “This has been here since I've been in this town. I've been here since I was 10,” Ryan Hodges said. “It's very difficult to see innocent people affected by things like this.” Nevada County issued evacuation orders for the Gates Place and Brunswick area, but the orders have since been lifted. Cal Fire said firefighters stopped the fire from advancing at 4:50 p.m.

Grass Valley police said officers arrested a woman in connection with the incident, but the exact circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation.

Officers identified the arrested woman as Elizabeth Huston of Nevada County. She was booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on a charge of arson of an occupied structure.

The Nevada County Consolidated Fire District was responsible for fighting the fire in the county, while Cal Fire handled the wildfire.

According to Cal Fire, an entire acre was burned in the fire.

Nobody was injured.
