On Wednesday, the techie bought a new SIM card in Noida and used it in his old phone, which helped officials track him down. Police approached him as he was leaving a mall, the report said. A senior officer said, “When three of us surrounded him, he realised we were plainclothes cops. He smiled and asked what now? We told him to fly back to the city and he was vehemently against it.”

After several hours of persuasion, the technician reluctantly agreed to return with the officers, mainly to clear his wife's missing person report. “They put me in jail, I will live there… but I will not return,” Gupta repeatedly told the officers, as quoted in the publication.

The technician and police arrived at Kempegowda International Airport on Friday morning. After a brief rest, he gave a statement to the police and was allowed to go home. During questioning, he admitted that he was facing serious domestic problems. He described his wife's “controlling” behaviour and stated that he was facing harsh criticism over minor issues and his personal freedom was restricted.

“I am her second husband. When I met her about three years ago, she was divorced and had a daughter of about 12 years old. I was a bachelor and agreed to marry her. We have an eight-month-old daughter together. She restricts my freedom, she screams even if a drop of rice or a piece of chapati falls from my plate. I should dress according to her, I cannot go out alone to enjoy tea,” the technician told the police.

To avoid detection after his wife announced his disappearance online with pictures and videos, the technician had shaved his head and changed his appearance. He told police that since August 4, he had travelled to Tirupati, Bhubaneswar, Delhi and finally Noida.
