Mass. man faces felony charges in crash that killed his son in Oxford County

RUMFORD, Maine (WMTW) – A Massachusetts man was indicted by an Oxford County grand jury on 16 charges relating to a deadly crash in Rumford in March.

Rumford police made the announcement after presenting their investigation’s conclusions to the grand jury on Friday.

Matthew Kellogg, 42, of Hopedale, Massachusetts, is accused of driving his Subaru Impreza while drunk on the afternoon of March 9. His two children, boys aged 6 and 9, were also in the vehicle, according to police.

At around 3:15 p.m., Kellogg was heading east on Route 2 in Rumford when he allegedly swerved across the road’s center line into the path of a Volvo driven by F. Michael Piveronas, 61, of Rumford.

Piveronas was alone in his car, according to officials, and was not able to avoid Kellogg’s car before the Subaru “violently crashed head-on” into the Volvo at a high speed.

Police reportedly found all four with “serious, life-threatening injuries.” The 9-year-old boy was found unresponsive at the crash site but did not survive, despite the efforts of a nurse and game warden on scene.

Piveronas, Kellogg, and Kellogg’s 6-year-old son were all treated and later released from their respective hospitals.

Kellogg’s blood alcohol level was found to be over the legal limit. Officials reportedly discovered multiple opened and unopened bottles inside his vehicle.

Police found that Piveronas was not under the influence of any substances, nor were any defects found in either the Volvo or Subaru that might have contributed to the crash.

Kellogg is now charged with:

  • one count of felony manslaughter
  • four counts of felony aggravated assault
  • three counts of felony aggravated operating under the influence of alcohol
  • three counts of felony reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon
  • three counts of driving to endanger
  • two counts of endangering the welfare of a child

Kellogg, who has not yet been arrested, will surrender himself to police in Maine. No date has been set for his arraignment in the Oxford County Superior Court in South Paris.
