Frederickson man arrested after allegedly kidnapping teen at gunpoint

Pierce County Sheriff's officials have arrested a man who allegedly kidnapped a teenager at gunpoint.

The 15-year-old victim told investigators that he was playing “Ding Dong Ditch” in a Frederickson neighborhood when the man drove up, parked his car on the street and fired his gun at her.

Brian Jones Canady was arrested. He told officers the teenager was sneaking around in his car.

A woman who called 911 told emergency dispatchers that Canady fired two shots before grabbing the teenager on the street and dragging him into his car.

The teenager said he was driven back to Canady's house and thrown to the ground, where Canady allegedly told him he was going to kill him.

“He laid the little boy down and said, 'Oh, he broke into my car. He broke into my car,'” said Devonn King, Canady's neighbor.

King said he initially believed Canady had caught the teenager on his property.

“He (the teenager) looked pretty scared,” King said. “He told me he didn't do anything.”

The teen told officers that Canady eventually got him to go into the house with the gun pointed at him before placing the weapon on the kitchen counter.

According to prosecutors, Canady called 911 and told dispatchers he had caught a car thief. Sheriff's officials said they found no evidence at the scene that the teen had broken into vehicles.

“We wouldn't expect police to shoot people who broke into a car,” said Sergeant Darren Moss Jr. of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department. “We don't expect the public to do that either.”

Canady is now accused of false imprisonment, assault, harassment and illegal possession of weapons.

According to prosecutors, Canady has already been convicted four times of second-degree robbery.

“It's definitely kind of scary because you never really know,” King said. “You wave at someone and assume based on their outward appearance that they're a good person.”

Canady was still in jail Friday night. KIRO 7 crews knocked on his door to see if anyone wanted to comment, but received no response.
