Man from Bessemer arrested for drug offenses after police chase

A Bessemer man was arrested on drug charges Wednesday after a chase with police in Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said 37-year-old Bryant Lamar Robertson is charged with “Fentanyl Trafficking ($1,000.00 bail); Heroin Trafficking ($1,000.00 bail); Methamphetamine Trafficking ($1,000,000.00 bail); Cocaine Possession with Intent to Distribute ($30,000.00 bail); Fleeing and Eluding ($15,000.00 bail); and Residing Among Certain Persons ($15,000.00 bail). Total bail: $3,060,000.00.”

The sheriff's office said detectives from the Jefferson County Vice and Narcotics Unit were in the Pratt City area at approximately 1:42 p.m. to investigate drug complaints.

The detectives were in a marked vehicle when they attempted to stop a blue Ford Edge for ignoring a stop sign.

The sheriff's office said when detectives activated their emergency lights, the driver of the vehicle fled and a chase began. The driver of the vehicle crashed into a Citgo at 3100 Ensley 5-Points West Avenue.

The driver, later identified as Robertson, was arrested after the accident. Robertson was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital as a precaution.

During the chase, the detectives also destroyed their marked vehicle when they struck a nearby gas pump, according to the sheriff's office. Both detectives were evaluated by paramedics at the scene and suffered no visible injuries, but were both transported to a local hospital.

“I am very pleased that our officers were able to seize the dangerous drugs and weapons that were floating around the streets of Jefferson County. The complaints of our citizens have not gone unnoticed. Our detectives and Federal Task Force Officers (TFOs) have done an excellent job working together. My number one goal is to keep the citizens of Jefferson County safe. I am very pleased that no injuries were reported during our efforts to stop this suspect,” said Sheriff Mark Pettway.

Robertson is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.

The sheriff's office reported the following was seized: 492 grams of methamphetamine, 18 grams of cocaine, 26 grams of fentanyl, 48 grams of heroin, 18 grams of fentanyl/methamphetamine mixture, Glock 23 .40 caliber with 1 magazine, chambered; SOTA Arms SA 15 with 4 magazines, 1 of which chambered. Both weapons were reported stolen. Five cell phones, three digital scales, pouch, backpack and fanny pack.
