Who would have thought that you could do so much with a cucumber?

TikTok is currently captivated by Logan Moffitt – a 23-year-old from Ottawa, Canada, who keeps going viral with his numerous “cucumber salad” recipes. One video of him making “jalapeño popper cucumber” has over 11 million views. Another of him making “sushi cucumber” has over 19 million views.

“It's starting to scare me that cucumber literally goes with everything,” Moffitt tells his nearly 5 million TikTok followers in a video.

The internet clearly seems to agree, and there's now a community of dedicated cucumber fans. “Logan, you caused a worldwide cucumber shortage,” wrote one commenter. “Bro started a whole trend on TikTok,” wrote another.

Why is TikTok obsessed with “Cucumber Boy”?

The cucumber craze may seem bizarre to some, but to Moffitt it makes perfect sense. After all, the appeal of the cucumber is obvious.

“Why cucumber? I've always loved cucumbers,” he tells USA TODAY. “I think because they're so versatile and refreshing, they go with a lot of different dishes. You can eat them in the morning, you can eat them at night, you can eat them in the afternoon, and there's never really a bad time to eat them.”

Moffitt didn't plan on becoming the face of the pickle community. He's been on TikTok for about four years and posted his first pickle video around 2022, but it wasn't until recently that he started posting his pickle recipes on a regular basis.

His videos follow more or less the same format, which Moffitt says he developed organically. First, he uses a mandoline slicer to slice a whole cucumber into a jar. Then he adds various ingredients—sometimes salmon cream cheese, sometimes kimchi, sometimes soy sauce, almost always MSG—put a lid on the jar, and shake the mixture before eating it.

Moffitt's dishes include cucumber granola and salt and vinegar cucumber chips. His specialty is finding ingredients that pair surprisingly well with cucumbers, and he says he spends a lot of time thinking about them. In comments, people marvel at the variety of Moffitt's recipes and the endless culinary possibilities of cucumbers.

The videos have also earned Moffitt a reputation as TikTok's “cucumber boy,” and he says his fans have even called him that in the real world. He doesn't mind the nickname.

“I think it's hilarious,” he says. “If someone wants to call you something, 'Cucumber Boy' is one of the best names they can choose.”

Is there such a thing as too much cucumber?

People also marvel at how much cucumber Moffitt incorporates into his dishes. Moffitt says he's a proponent of using a whole cucumber in his recipes; for some, that's just too much – and this has sparked a playful debate among commenters.

“It's completely polarizing,” he says. “Some people hear, 'Oh, you have to eat a whole cucumber,' and say, 'That's a lot of cucumber.' And then other people hear that and say, 'That's a normal amount of cucumber.' You know what I mean? So that creates a little bit of controversy. … Is the whole cucumber too much or is the whole cucumber not enough?” In reality, cucumbers have a number of health benefits, including helping with weight loss, lowering blood sugar and ensuring regular bowel movements (but as with anything, don't overdo it by eating too many).

Fans have also tried to replicate Moffitt's recipes. In one attempt, a TikToker apparently accidentally cuts his finger while slicing a cucumber with a mandoline slicer, just like Moffitt does. (“First-time users should definitely use the hand guard that comes with mandoline slicers,” Moffitt warns.)

Moffitt doesn't know how long his cucumber fame will last. After all, he says, TikTok trends are notoriously fleeting. Still, he's excited to see where the cucumber craze will take him.
