State Police: Man kills wife and shoots himself in McDonald's parking lot

STURGIS, MI – A man killed his wife and then shot himself in a McDonald's parking lot on Friday.

The woman killed was a 25-year-old Sturgis resident. The man, who is in critical condition, is 29 and also from Sturgis. Michigan State Police have not yet released their names.

According to state police, the fatal incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 16, in the parking lot of the McDonald's in White Pigeon, about 11 miles west of Sturgis.

The two were a married couple who had met at McDonald's. The police said it was a “standard child exchange”.

The couple's children were not present during the incident. State police said the children were believed to be with other family members at the time of the shooting.

During the exchange, the woman was sitting in her vehicle while her estranged husband stood directly outside. According to police, an argument ensued during which the man pulled out a firearm and shot his wife and then himself several times.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital where she died. The man was also taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, state police said.

No one else was injured in the incident.

“Help us keep everyone affected by this incident, including the children and both families, in our thoughts and prayers,” state police officials said Friday in a social media post about the incident.

The incident remains under investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the report will be submitted to the St. Joseph County District Attorney's Office for consideration of charges.

Michigan State Police were assisted by multiple agencies, including White Pigeon and Constantine police and firefighters, Three Rivers Police and EMS, St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office, Life Care Ambulance, Med Flight and Samaritan Flight.
