Chicago shooting: COPA investigates after police officer shoots at vehicle wanted for murder

CHICAGO (WLS) — The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating after a Chicago police officer opened fire in the city's southwest area.

Chicago police said it happened around 5:35 p.m. Friday in the 1700 block of W. 47th Street when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop.

According to police, the vehicle was wanted in connection with a homicide in the 1700 block of West 47th Street.

As they attempted to stop the suspect, an officer fired a shot, hitting the suspect's vehicle, police said.

According to police, no one was hit by gunfire.

The driver stopped the vehicle and attempted to flee, but was arrested, CPD said.

The officer who fired his weapon was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries and observation, police said.

The details of this incident, including a full investigation into the use of force, are being investigated by COPA, police said.

The officials concerned will be entrusted with routine administrative tasks for at least 30 days.
