A housing estate in York was cordoned off after police were called to a “serious incident”.

About five police vehicles and several officers were on site at the crime scene at Bellfarm Avenue and Roche Avenue on Saturday morning.

Local residents reported seeing a helicopter and up to ten armed officers in the early morning hours.

North Yorkshire Police have asked the public to avoid the area as investigators are expected to continue working at the scene throughout the weekend.

Police manning the cordon said residents of the settlement were allowed to enter and leave.

A police spokesman said: “We understand that this may cause concern among the public and would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation as we work diligently to establish the facts.”

“Further details will be announced as soon as we are able.”
