Garbage collection in the PDC tourist area back in action

Playa del Carmen, QR — Workers who collect garbage in the tourist areas of Playa del Carmen have reached a settlement after a strike. The one-day strike began when workers demanded not to receive severance pay.

The garbage collection company Electrotaller Industrial y Comercial El Rural has agreed to pay the overdue payments in two installments: the first half in mid-September and the second half at the end of September.

The severance payments are part of the company's contract with the current management of Solidaridad, which is about to undergo a change of ownership.

Cecilio Puc Sansores, general secretary of the Solidaridad city council, said the agreement was formalized a few hours after the workers began protesting. Sansores said 50 percent of their severance pay would be paid to them on September 15 and the second half before the 30th of the same month.

The garbage collection company is a subcontractor of the Lili Campos administration for garbage collection in the tourist areas and in the first square of the city of Playa del Carmen. The current administration is about to end and a new mayor will take over in the next few weeks.
