Former police officer rapes 13-year-old child, gets weekends in prison and probation – Crime Online

A former New York police officer has been sentenced to a controversial ten weekend prison term for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

On Wednesday, Judge Kristina Karle sentenced 40-year-old former Rochester police officer Shawn Jordan to 10 weekends in jail — 20 days total — followed by 10 years of probation as part of a plea agreement. He must also register as a sex offender.

Karle agreed to the deal and told Jordan, “I hope you feel ashamed, I hope you feel remorse and I hope you never hurt a child again,” according to Rochester First.

Kathryn Robb, national director of the Children's Justice Campaign of the organization Enough Abuse, described the verdict on Thursday as a slap in the face to the victim and her family.

“This verdict is the epitome of injustice and a dangerous message to child sexual abusers. It should tell them: 'Don't worry, we won't be too harsh on you,'” Robb said. “This little girl will be trapped in her memories for the rest of her life, while [the rapist] only loses 20 days of his freedom.”

Robb, an attorney who played a key role in getting state legislatures across the U.S. to change their laws against child sexual abuse, added, according to NBC 10, “The rape of a child is one of the most horrific crimes with lifelong consequences for the victim.”

Scott Berkowitz, president and founder of the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), also criticized the verdict, saying, “A sentence of 10 years or more would make much more sense than one in 10 weekends. He will be out in a few months, while she will be dealing with the consequences of his crime for many years to come.”

According to the New York Post, Jordan admitted in March to sexually abusing the teenager in 2022 while working as a police officer in Rochester.

Jordan also faces a 2023 trial involving another victim. He is accused of exposing himself during a video call with a 16-year-old girl in Monroe County, New York. The case reportedly led to his suspension and resignation.
