JPD arrests man for capital crime against one-year-old child

The Jackson Police Department and the U.S. Marshal Task Force have arrested a man for the murder of a one-year-old in Jackson. The JPD announced that 31-year-old Herman Coleman, also known as Herman Arthur Gardner, was arrested and charged with capital murder.

On December 21, 2023, the JPD launched an investigation after a child was brutally beaten in the 3500 block of Sunset Drive. The one-year-old protégé, Hunter, died and her mother, Yolanda Hunter, was charged with felony child abuse in December. Her bail was set at $10,000.

At the time of the child's death, four other children were found in the apartment and placed in the care of the youth welfare office. The cause of death was a liver injury caused by blunt force trauma.
