Why was this candidate required to wear a dress code at the interview?

A TikToker has sparked outrage after wearing a controversial outfit to a job interview. In the clip, which had 3.8 million views as of Saturday, Tyreshia (@mtyreshiadaily) shared her interview outfit, which consisted of a white, long-sleeved blouse and black shorts.

“I was just given a certain dress code for an interview and then they decided to postpone the interview with me until tomorrow,” she said, giving viewers a 360-degree look at the outfit.

In the video's description, she added: “I can't believe the recruiter asked me to change my interview clothes and then come back. I look very groomed and professional so no!”

But while Tyreshia seemed to have already made up her mind, commentators were less sure.

One TikTok user called wearing shorts during an interview “crazy,” while another called it “insane.”

“Neat? Yes,” added a third. “Professional? No.”

Another commenter blamed the education system for this particular faux pas, writing: “Schools REALLY need to bring back careers information days and careers preparation courses.”

Overall, the consensus in the comments was that it is not a good idea to wear shorts to a job interview, as one user put it.

“One thing about the comments section,” added another, “they are not on your side.”

In fact, many commentators were surprised that the company had offered to reschedule.

“The offer to reschedule was very generous of them,” admitted one TikToker.

Another echoed: “I'm in HR. They gave you a second chance. That's rare. I'm not going to lie, I wouldn't do that. Dress for the job.”

Should you wear shorts to a job interview?

On Quora, users who asked this question received a similarly unanimous answer: “Never wear shorts to a job interview.”

One user who states on their profile that they have been involved in recruitment processes said: “Coming to an interview in shorts is a good way to disqualify yourself. Very few companies consider shorts to be appropriate work attire and coming to an interview in shorts is seen as a sign of disdain or too casual an attitude.”

He added that interviewees should be prepared for the interview to be “uncomfortable.”

He concluded: “[L]If you put your well-being first, it may cause you to lose the job in the long run.”
