Shootings between guards and passing vehicle reported at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland

A base spokesman said there was an exchange of gunfire early Saturday morning between U.S. Air Force security forces and someone who opened fire twice at an entrance to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

“It was a shot from a passing vehicle outside the base that fired shots at the gate, which required our security forces to respond,” base spokeswoman Stefanie Antosh said in a statement. “There is no threat to the facility. We had no injuries or deaths.”

Antosh said the shooting is being investigated by San Antonio police, who said in a news release that the first shooting occurred around 2:15 a.m.

“Security personnel reported hearing multiple gunshots and that the shots flew past them,” Sergeant Washington Moscoso said in the press release. “Following this incident, security personnel deployed additional armed guards as a precautionary measure.”

Shortly after 4:30 a.m., a vehicle stopped near the same entrance, Moscoso said.

“Air Force security personnel were shot at a second time, but in the presence of additional security personnel, several Air Force personnel returned fire on the suspect vehicle,” Moscoso said.

The vehicle then fled. No injuries were reported and the shooting remains under investigation, Moscoso said.

According to Antosh, it is not known how many shots were fired, how many shooters there were or what their motive was.

The entrance was closed for several hours after the shooting before reopening around 9:30 a.m. However, the base was not sealed off, according to Antosh.

In addition to Lackland, Joint Base San Antonio includes Randolph Air Force Base, the Army's Fort Sam Houston, and the Camp Bulllis training camp.

Lackland is home to more than 24,000 active-duty soldiers and 10,000 Department of Defense civilians, according to the base's website. This includes the 37th Training Squadron, 149th Fighter Wing, 59th Medical Squadron, Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, 24th Air Force Wing, 67th Network Warfare Wing, Cryptologic Systems Group, National Security Agency and 70 associated units.
