Family files appeal after teenage skateboarder injured in hit-and-run crash in Escondido

ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) – Family members of a 14-year-old skateboarder who was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash in Escondido are appealing for information.

More than a week later, the chalk outline of a skateboard can still be seen on North Fig Street, near Grand Avenue.

It is believed that the 14-year-old was on the street two Thursdays ago around 9:30 p.m. Family members have identified him as Angel Ornelas.

According to police, he had collided with a car. Angel was found unconscious on the street and taken to hospital. A car was heard speeding away in a southerly direction. Eight days later, relatives say Angel's condition is still critical.

“It breaks our hearts to hear this,” Lupe Anguiano said. “It's just so wrong.”

Anguiano, a neighbor who also works at a school a few blocks away, said she fears tragic events could occur in the area.

“People drive way too fast. Even though the speed limit is 35 miles per hour, some people only drive 50. At night you can hear racing on the streets,” said Anguino.

There is a busy intersection just a few meters from the accident site. You can see a school crossing and a yield sign, but no stop sign.

Anguiano says she would like to see a stop sign or speed bumps and an additional sidewalk.

“You see that there is a sidewalk on this side of the road, but not on the side where the accident occurred,” Anguiano said.

While neighbors are concerned about safety, Angel's family is keeping vigil outside a hospital. A spokesperson told ABC 10News the family is hoping someone with information will come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Escondido Police and Office Paul Smyth at 760-839-4423.

Angel's family is asking for prayers. A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help with medical and other expenses.
