Former UFC star Cain Velasquez pleads no contest to attempted murder

Velasquez's plea bargain to charges of attempted murder, assault and multiple weapons in exchange for a lighter sentence.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KYMA, KECY-TV) – Former UFC star and Kofa High School graduate Cain Velasquez was on trial for attempted murder for a February 2022 incident. He allegedly repeatedly shot at a man accused of sexually assaulting his son. Instead, Velasquez wounded the man's stepfather after a chase.

Because of his guilty plea, the charge of first-degree murder is dropped and he no longer faces the mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 18, but the actual verdict is not expected until later this year.
