INTERVIEW | Brandon McNulty on his own ambitions after winning the time trial: “Right now it’s just about helping them and seeing where I end up”

Brandon McNulty is the rather surprising winner of the first time trial of the Vuelta a Espana. He beat Mathias Vacek and Wout Van Aert to secure the first red jersey of this edition. Cyclinguptodate met the American after the stage to get his first impressions.

Is this McNulty's best win so far? “I'd like to say so. I mean, the Giro win was a big win too. That was kind of the highlight, but yes, it's nice to come away with a time trial win in the Grand Tour. Time trial has always been one of my favorite disciplines. So now I have two Grand Tour wins. That's great.”

So McNulty is currently leading the Vuelta a Espana general classification, but his team UAE Team Emirates have entered the race with other leaders and so we will most likely see the American lose the red jersey in the coming stages. Although it wouldn't be too far-fetched to see the 26-year-old battling the best in the mountains, just like in the 2022 Tour de France.

Does he dream of performing like that in this Vuelta? “It's possible, I'm in really good shape. The priority is to help Joao and Adam and then… if I can last three weeks, that's already great. And then I can stay behind those two after helping them. But yeah, I think right now it's just about helping them and seeing where I end up and just focusing on feeling good for the whole three weeks.”
