Hundreds line up to try the viral chocolate muffins at the Olympic Village in New York City

The Olympic Village's viral chocolate muffins made their debut in New York City, with hundreds lining up outside the East Village pop-up shop to try them.

Hundreds of people lined up on August 17 to check out the new pop-up dedicated to the chocolate muffins that were all the rage in the Olympic Village of the 2024 Paris Olympics after Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen posted about them on TikTok.

A user on X, previously Þjórsárdentook photos of the blockbuster and wrote: “There's an insanely long line for a pop-up on 2nd Avenue in the East Village this morning.”

Christiansen – affectionately known online as “Muffin Man” – shared a popular video series that garnered millions of views on TikTok, showing viewers his addiction to the Village’s delicious “Chocolate Muffin,” which he gave a rating of 11/10 stars.

In a video, Christiansen can be seen walking down the street with two muffins in each hand and singing to the music of the bass-heavy Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas theme song. Another hilarious video saw him being “caught” with chocolate hands when a stash of muffins was discovered in his drawers.

Regarding the reaction of fans to his muffin addiction, he said: “I never thought I would take fan photos in the Olympic Village, because (usually) only the biggest athletes are there, but I did it. People came up to me, chatted about the muffin and talked to me.”

Although Christiansen didn't appear at the pop-up, many fans are hoping the pastries are as good as he touted. Food influencer Alyssa La Spisa (@the_reccomendista) visited the pop-up and raved about it to her viewers in a recent video posted on TikTok.

“It's really like cake, holy shit,” she said. “Yummy. If you're craving chocolate, this is it.”

“This looks like heaven in a muffin,” one user captioned her video. Another added, “It's about time the muffin came to town.”

Nearly 40,000 meals were served each day of the Games to thousands of athletes from over 200 countries and territories. Head Baker Tony Doré noted that many of these athletes gathered at the Olympic Village Bakery. From fresh baguettes to delicious “Viennoiseries,” Doré and his team produce a variety of delicacies every day during the Games.

However, the muffins were made by a different manufacturer and rivaled the typical French pastries in popularity, with consumption of the pastries reportedly reaching an estimated 4,000 a day. The world-famous chocolate muffin recipe has since been posted on TikTok, and Christiansen is one of many who plan to recreate it at home.
