“I didn’t complete the time trial I would have liked to, but the Vuelta has only just begun” – Carlos Rodriguez is not giving up hope of winning the red jersey at the Vuelta a Espana

Carlos Rodríguez finished the time trial of the first stage of the 2024 Vuelta a Espana in 49th place, 46 seconds behind the stage winner Brandon McNulty. The INEOS Grenadiers rider spoke into the race microphones after crossing the finish line.

“The truth is that it was difficult to stay in position. I struggled to push and stay on the bike, which was not easy, but I have to be happy that I reached the finish line safely. The truth is that I did not complete the time trial that I would have liked, but the Vuelta has only just begun,” he began about his feelings during the time trial. “The wind was very strong and came from the side. Not favorable conditions for cycling, but well, it would be the same or similar for everyone.”

“I'm not a weatherman and I can't predict when it will get better or worse. The truth is that we in the team have experienced times when it looked like the conditions were going to be good, but you never know how it will end up,” he said of the possibility of going out at a different time.

“I'm not entirely happy with the result of the time trial, but that's the way it is. The Vuelta has only just begun and there's still a long way to go,” Rodriguez sums up. “Even during the reconnaissance at midday it was a bit off, but not that bad. Now it's at the limit for cycling.”
