Dalit man found dead, relatives sue for 'honour killing' | News from India

BAREILLY: A 25-year-old Dalit man identified by his first name, Suraj, was found hanging from a tree in Bareilly's Fatehganj West on Saturday, six days after he allegedly had sex with a 16-year-old girl from a Minority communityHis family told police that the minor’s relatives had “murdered” him.
Deputy SP (Bareilly) Mukesh Chandra Mishra said, “Suraj had eloped with a minor and was living in Rudrapur. The girl's family had filed a complaint of kidnapping against him. After the girl was found, her statement was recorded by the police on Friday. On Saturday, Suraj was found hanging from a tree on the outskirts of the village where his uncle lives. His body was handed over to the family after the autopsy and the relatives were assured of strict action against the culprits.”
Mishra added, “We have now filed an FIR under BNS sections 191-2 (sedition), 103-1 (murder), 238 (disappearance of evidence), 352 (intentional insult) and 351-2 (criminal intimidation) along with the SC/ST Act against 10 persons. The case is being investigated and action will be taken based on the evidence collected and the findings of the autopsy report. We have deployed police force to the village to maintain peace.”
Meanwhile, several villagers and right-wing activists gathered at the scene and demanded action against the girl’s relatives, whom they accused of “Honor killing.'
