Human trafficking: Man sentenced to 3 years in prison for human trafficking; 12 women rescued | Thane News

Thane: A 33-year-old Hotel Manager was convicted and sentenced to three years Imprisonment in a significant Human trafficking Case from 2014. 12 women were rescued from a hut. Additional Judge Amit M. Shete found Ravi Jagannath Shetty guilty under various sections of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act (PITA).
The case, registered at Kasarvadavali police station, involved trafficking of several women for prostitution at Shreya Lodging and Boarding in Thane on July 24, 2014. The Anti-Human Trafficking Cell (AHTC) of Thane Police conducted a raid based on information from a Kandivli-based organisation and rescued the 12 women from the lodging house and another location. The raid was conducted by the then police officer Madan Ballal and his team members. A case was subsequently registered at Kasarwadavali police station under various sections of the IPC and PITA Act. In his verdict, Justice Shete observed that while the victims were not forced or coerced into prostitution, Shetty, as the manager of the lodging house, was guilty of running a brothel, living off the proceeds of prostitution and procuring victims for prostitution. The accused, Faiz Wahid Shaikh and Azharuddin Moinuddin Momin, are alleged to have stolen 24 mobile phones worth Rs 540,000. The stolen phones were reportedly sent to Nepal via Mumbai and Madhya Pradesh. Further investigation is ongoing.
Police officer dies from his own AK47 at Bijapur police station
Head constable Sannu Hapka died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds in Bijapur district. The incident occurred soon after he was posted to a road construction detail and was handed an AK47. Hapka was found with a chest wound and was rushed to Bhairamgarh Health Centre but could not be saved. The reason behind the suspected suicide is currently under investigation.
