Calcutta rape and murder case: CBI investigators also confirmed his version with that of doctors, interns and nurses who were on duty at the hospital that night

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday subjected former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr Sandip Ghosh to a marathon interrogation.

It was the second consecutive day that the former principal was being questioned by the agency over the gruesome rape and murder of a junior doctor in the seminar hall of a government hospital in Calcutta.

  1. According to the officials, the CBI asked Sandip Ghosh where he was on the night of the doctor-educator's rape and murder. The agency also asked him who informed him about the incident and what his immediate reaction was.
  2. The CBI investigators also confirmed his version with that of doctors, interns and nurses who were on duty at the hospital that night, PTI reported.
  3. During the first round of questioning, the former headmaster was asked about his initial reaction to the news of the doctor's death, who he had instructed to inform the family and how and who contacted the police, the agency officials said. The agency quoted a CBI official as saying some of his answers were confused.
  4. The official said the CBI asked Sandip Ghosh about the weekly duty roster of the pulmonary department where the victim worked and it was found that the victim's doctor had to work up to 48 hours at a stretch.
  5. The CBI has already questioned 20 people from a list of 40, including doctors and police officers.
  6. The CBI has invited two psychologists from New Delhi to participate in the interview.
  7. On Saturday, a team reached Sambhunath Pandit Street in South Kolkata, the rented residence of main accused Sanjoy Roy, and spoke to his mother about his last whereabouts. The agency is trying to create a map of the places the accused visited on the day of the rape and murder. They have also contacted his friends, doctors and police officials who knew the accused.
  8. Amid ongoing protests against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata Police has imposed Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 (formerly Section 144 of CrPC) for seven days.

An order issued by Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal on Saturday said that rallies, meetings, processions, dharnas, demonstrations and unlawful assembly of five or more persons were prohibited in the specified area of ​​Kolkata. “…In exercise of the power conferred by sub-section (1) of section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, read with sub-section (3) of the said section, I, Vineet Kumar Goyal, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, in my capacity as Magistrate for the Kolkata Metropolitan Region as well as the South 24 Parganas District (within the limits of the suburbs of Kolkata falling under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police), hereby prohibit for a period of seven (7) days from 18.08.2024 to 24.08.2024 or until further orders, any unlawful assembly of five (5) or more persons, carrying of lathis, deadly or other dangerous weapons or commission of any act likely to result in breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquillity within the specified area in the city of Kolkata,” the order said.
  10. The doctor-in-training was found dead in the hospital's seminar room earlier this month. Her autopsy report revealed that she had been tortured and then strangled. Her body bore numerous injuries and blood was oozing from her eyes, private parts and mouth.
