Armed robbers break into a man's shed and threaten to kill him

INDIANAPOLIS – IMPD is searching for armed robbers who broke into a homeowner's cabin, pointed a gun at him and threatened to kill him.

“I had nightmares about it, thinking I could have died, thinking about my kids and everything,” Tony Perkins said.

Perkins was sleeping on Tuesday morning when a loud noise in his driveway woke him up around 4:30 a.m.

“When I came out, two guys rolled my motorcycle back. I guess they were trying to steal it,” Perkins said. “When I came around the corner, the skinny guy started running and the other guy pointed a gun at me and put it in my face. He said he was going to blow my head off if I didn't stay back.”

It happened on the southeast side of Indy near Garfield Park.

Video from Perkins' doorbell shows two men, one trying to get into the house through the front door and then going around to the back door.

“He dropped my motorcycle, pointed a gun at me and ran away. They damaged my motorcycle and stole some tools, but I don't know yet what they took,” he said.

Perkins said his rear window was smashed, the shed doors were ripped open and the flat-screen television in his sunroom was ripped off the wall.

“The noise was also loud. They broke the whole lock and it was loud because they broke it. That's what woke me up,” he said.

The city police are investigating the case.

They told WRTV that there have been 775 robberies so far this year. That's 20% less than last year, but it's still concerning for investigators.

“Every day, detectives investigate robberies because they are violent crimes, plain and simple,” said IMPD Officer Drew Brown. “Any time you use violence or threaten violence or make someone fearful of material goods, it is devastating.”

Perkins hopes someone recognizes the men.

“They need to be stopped before they hurt someone else,” he said.

The police are asking you to think about the security measures in your home.

“If you have the means, improving your home security system is a huge benefit that can help prevent things like this from happening,” Officer Brown said.

“I think everyone should have a Ring doorbell or security cameras. I was surprised: only three people on my street had a Ring doorbell,” Perkins said.

According to police, tools were left behind and seized as evidence.
