Mukhtiar Panghali murders his pregnant wife Manjit

A Canadian teacher told family and friends she was overjoyed to be expecting her second child with her husband. But Manjit and Mukhtiar Panghali's marriage was not as perfect as it seemed – and just months after her disappearance, on the due date of their baby, Mukhtiar Panghali (known to his friends as “MP”) was arrested for her gruesome murder.

“What kind of crazy monster would do something like that?” said Jasmine Bhambra, Manjit’s sister, on Killer relationship with Faith JenkinsSaturdays at 8/7c on Oxygen. “We were all so traumatized and stunned. And had so many questions.”

On October 18, 2006, MP told police that Manjit had gone to a prenatal yoga class at around 6:30 pm and never returned. He added that he had put his three-year-old daughter to bed at 9 pm and had gone back to bed around midnight. The next morning, he asked his father-in-law to take his daughter to school while he went to work.

“When [he] arrived, [his father-in-law] was concerned and said, “Okay, aren’t you worried?” Harj Sidhu, a sergeant with the Delta Police Department in British Columbia, said on Killer relationship with Faith Jenkins. “And MP said, 'No, she'll show up, she's already gone away and come back once.'”

After finishing his work at a local school, MP went to a bar with his fellow teachers. But his father-in-law called him and told him that his wife had still not returned. At midnight, 26 hours after Manjit, who was four months pregnant, went missing, her husband filed a police complaint.

Relatives of the couple noted that there were marital problems in the year before Manjit's disappearance. MP's brother moved into their house for a while, causing stress, and Manjit told friends that she was unhappy with her husband's drinking. The couple sought counseling together.

The MP surprised the police by claiming that his wife was having an affair.

“He says, 'I think she's actually cheating on me with one of her high school friends, Tony Phunal.' That almost means, 'Yeah, for all I know, she's probably dating Tony,'” Sidhu said.

Phunal and Manjit had known each other for years and although both were married, they had recently reconnected through social media and developed a friendship. MP told police that the two had gone out for dinner together and hinted that his wife was cheating on him.

“The MP eventually told me that it had taken them over a year to get pregnant with this new baby,” said Lyndsay O'Ruairc, a Surrey police officer, on Killer relationship with Faith Jenkins“He said that at one point Manjit shouted at him and said, 'You know, there are other people who can impregnate me.'”

Although Tony Phunal denied having an affair with Manjit, it was clear to the police that even the appearance of an affair could be sufficient motive for MP to want his wife dead.

“A lot of it is public perception. What would the community think?” Sidhu said. “And if people saw Tony and Manjit in a restaurant, that shame would be very hard for someone like MP to bear.”

On October 23, 2006, five days after she was reported missing, Manjit Panghali's body was discovered about 20 miles from her home. Her cause of death was strangulation, and her body was severely burned after her death. On the same day, her vehicle was discovered about 6 miles from her home. Her purse and phone were missing from the car.

The police conducted a paternity test on the baby and determined that MP was the father.

The proof

Police determined that Manjit Panghali showed up for her yoga class at 6:30 p.m. on the night she disappeared and left the class at 8:30 p.m. Investigators examined hundreds of hours of street surveillance video footage to look for clues about what happened to her after she left.

A video from a Chevron gas station just blocks from the Panghali home proved crucial to the investigation. It shows MP entering the gas station at around 12:15 a.m. on the night his wife disappeared and purchasing a newspaper and a lighter.

“It was huge,” said Guy Leeson, a sergeant with Delta PD, on Killer relationship with Faith Jenkins“That was definitely a turning point. He needed those items to ignite the fire.”

Manjit Panghali's cell phone records also proved to be important evidence in the case. They showed that she called her home's landline several times after 6:30 p.m., although her husband claimed they never spoke after she left the house. And experts found important information about the whereabouts of Manjit's phone.

“We found that the SIM card tied to the MP's phone number was inserted into Manji's phone hardware on October 19, a day after Manjit's disappearance,” Sidhu said.

Leeson added: “MP actually used her phone. Even during the [missing persons] press conference, he had the phone in his pocket.”

On March 12, 2007, the due date of his unborn child, MP was arrested for the murder of his wife.

“It was an 'Aha!' moment because there is no other explanation as to why the phone was in his possession,” Sidhu said. “He must have gotten it from Manjit. Manjit came home that night and he was the only one who had the opportunity to kill her. That was the missing piece of the puzzle we were looking for.”

Was MP released on parole?

In November 2010, Mukhtiar Panghali was charged with murder in the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

“We thought he was jealous,” Leeson said. “He thought she was having an affair. When she came back from yoga, there was some kind of altercation. He hit her and killed her.”

On February 4, 2011, MP was found guilty of premeditated murder. On March 17, 2011, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was granted parole in October 2023.

“When they say life, he really didn't get a life,” Bhambra said. “Compared to someone who can't come back? 16 years – is that justice? It's not justice.”
