New York – Luis Severino threw a four-hitter for his second career shutout and the New York Mets got home runs from Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso in a 4-0 victory Saturday over the Miami Marlins.

After losing his last three games, Severino (8-6) had the last-place Marlins completely under control on a rainy afternoon at Citi Field, striking out eight players and walking one in the first shutout by a Mets starter since Jacob deGrom shut out Washington in April 2021.

“It was incredible,” Severino said. “It was really fun to go out there and compete for that fan base.”

Severino's only other complete game in the major leagues was a five-hit shutout for the New York Yankees in Houston in May 2018.

The right-hander hit Jake Burger with his first pitch in the ninth inning, prompting a visit from manager Carlos Mendoza. But after a discussion on the mound, Mendoza left Severino in the game to loud cheers from the 34,744 spectators.

He struck out the next three batters and ended the game with a spectacular roar, screaming and pumping his fist at Derek Hill after striking him out with his 113th pitch – the most hits by a Mets player this season.

“It was a special feeling,” Mendoza said. “The crowd was behind him. It was a special day.”

Mendoza worked with Severino as a coach for the Yankees for five seasons and has known the right-hander since his youth.

“I'm proud of him because it wasn't easy,” Mendoza said. “I knew he was staring at me, and I know when he stares at me like that, he wants another one. It was an easy decision for me.”

Severino threw three pitches in the third inning and four in the sixth, becoming the first pitcher in at least 25 years to throw two innings of four or fewer pitches.

“I feel really good,” he said. “I feel healthy. I haven't felt like this in a long time.”

New York won only the second consecutive game this month. The Mets began the day one game behind Atlanta, securing the National League's final wild card.

Lindor hit the seventh pitch from Miami starter Max Meyer (3-3) into right-center field for his second home run of the year and the 20th of his career. Alonso hit a home run in the second inning and the Mets scored in each of the first four innings for the first time since May 1995 against San Francisco.

With his 100th home run at Citi Field, Alonso joins Darryl Strawberry and Mike Piazza as the only Mets players with 100 or more home runs in Queens.

Brandon Nimmo tripled in the third inning and scored on a two-out RBI single by Jesse Winker on his 31st birthday. Lindor walked with two outs in the fourth inning and scored on a Mark Vientos double.

Severino benefited from the Marlins running into an unusual double play in the third inning.

“They practiced that before BP,” Severino joked about his infielders.

Miami has lost six of eight games.

Meyer allowed four runs and six hits in four innings. He has a 7.99 ERA in 23 1/3 innings since being recalled from the minors on July 27.

“He's still developing,” Miami manager Skip Schumaker said. “This is really his first full year at this level, so he's still trying to figure some things out, too.”

Nimmo chased Kyle Stowers' sinking liner in the seventh inning and caught it on a sliding catch in left field. Severino stood with his hands raised to acknowledge the catch and stayed near the mound until Nimmo reached him so he could say something directly to the outfielder.
