8 foods you should buy now before prices rise for winter

In this case, both fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables are an option. This time of year is when you should “take advantage of the bounty of summer,” Schuering said. “This is the time when I grab as many peaches, berries, tomatoes, corn and anything else I can pickle or preserve.”

“Prices for items like blueberries or cherries are usually much higher in the winter because they have to be shipped from further away,” Schwartz said.

While many products are likely cheaper now than they were in the winter, it can be difficult to buy products far in advance. However, there are ways you can make your purchases last longer.

“You can make jam for water bath canning, or you can use pressure to do just about anything,” Schuering said. “I also like to whip up salsas, marinara sauces and other tomato preserves, and pickle everything from grapes and green beans to okra and cucumbers. Not only do homemade products like these usually taste better and are less expensive than store-bought, they also make great holiday gifts and add a little something extra to any cheese or charcuterie board.”

Alternatively, you can buy frozen foods. “You can save a lot of money by stocking up on frozen foods,” says Schwartz. “Freezing preserves the vitamins and minerals – and the fruit is as nutritious as fresh fruit. Plus, in the winter, fruit can bring a touch of summer and help drive away the cold, dreary days.”
