Durga Puja organiser urges others to reject Bengal government's Rs 85,000 fee

Amid protests against the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, Sajal Ghosh, BJP leader and chief organiser of the highly-publicised Santosh Mitra Square Puja Committee, on Saturday called on all Durga Puja committees in West Bengal to reject the state government's fee of Rs 85,000 as a sign of protest against the “lack of assurance of women's safety”.

Ghosh, who has been organising the puja in north Kolkata for several years, presenting various themes that attract hundreds of thousands of revellers, told PTI, “Under Mamata Banerjee's regime, which has failed to ensure their safety, women are being abused, raped and killed in public places, at work and at home. Amid growing public anger, she is blaming everyone else for the situation, but herself.”

CBI conducts psychological examination of the accused

The CBI will conduct a psychological examination of Sanjay Roy, the accused in the rape and murder case of a doctor in Kolkata that sparked nationwide protests, officials said on Saturday.

A team of psychologists and behavioural analysts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi has arrived in Calcutta to conduct the necessary tests, it said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has already taken Roy into custody.

The federal agency on Saturday questioned Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the incident took place, for the second consecutive day in connection with the alleged rape and killing of the aspiring doctor.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi on Saturday lashed out at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape and murder of a paramedic in Kolkata, alleging that the police, in collusion with “TMC goons”, had planned to destroy evidence related to the case.

The minister also accused the West Bengal government of mishandling the case.

Bengal government announces numerous measures to ensure safety of women in the workplace

The West Bengal government on Saturday announced a series of measures to ensure safety of women at workplaces, especially in government hospitals where they have to work night shifts, including designated rest rooms and video-monitored “safety zones”.

Alapan Bandyopadhyay, chief adviser to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, announced the measures during a press conference here, amid ongoing protests by doctors across the state against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital.

Apart from hospitals and medical colleges, hostels and other places where women are employed during night shifts will now come under the purview of a flagship volunteer programme called 'Rattirer Sathi – Night Helpers', he said.
