None of the Dolphins' substitutes proved in the win over Washington that they deserved the job as QB2

The battle for the Miami Dolphins' backup quarterback should be officially over, as Skylar Thompson has given Mike McDaniel plenty of reasons to choose him over Mike White. But the competition remains wide open. Seriously?

Thompson wasn't perfect in Miami's 13-6 win over the Commanders, not even close. On his first drive, it looked like he was still playing against the Falcons. He calmed down considerably on his next drive, although he missed an open Durham Smythe. He led the team on a drive that would have been a touchdown if not for a deflected pass that Braxton Berrios couldn't catch in the end zone. On the next drive, Thompson was a little too long on a deep pass to the outside and had to deal with another dropped pass.

Dolphins fans know this is a two-way battle. It's unthinkable that another quarterback will step in and compete, and while neither quarterback has shown much to warrant “confidence,” McDaniel will have to choose between the two.

When Tua Tagovailoa, who played perfectly, left the game after his only series, Thompson came on the field to end the first half, not White. Is that something to watch? So far against the Falcons and Commanders, Thompson has taken on the workload against the second team while White has been relegated to the deeper rosters. Against Washington, Thompson managed just over 60 yards passing, and White ended his first drive with a lost fumble in the red zone. He finished the game with 116 yards, completing 11 of 16 pass attempts.

On his first series of the game, White started strong with a nice long pass to Erik Ezukanma, but he needed more attention in the pocket and had to watch his drive end in a turnover. Hardly enough to make a statement for the job. He was able to recover on his next snap, but took a sack and had to make a quicker read.

If Tagovailoa is out in 2024, the Dolphins can only hope that a veteran player is available on the open market. Since teams no longer have to have three quarterbacks on the roster to have a third quarterback in case of emergency, options could be available when the final cuts are made. Still, McDaniel faces a difficult decision between White and Thompson. Who knows who will still be around at that point in Week 1.
