Social media posts:

A viral short video clip purports to show the final moments of the doctor who was raped and murdered in Kolkata. The video purports to show tragic scenes in which the doctor films herself shortly before her death.

on facebook.

The story gained traction on social media and the sensational nature of the video further fuelled the claim, which quickly spread across platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.

The video also went viral on TikTok.

Fact check:

Recently, a video purporting to show the last moments of late doctor Dr. Moumita Debnath, who was allegedly raped and murdered, has gone viral on social media. The video has stirred great emotion and concern, leading many to question its authenticity.

Source of the video:

We searched for some of the first occurrences of the video and found that they had been shared since at least August 15, as seen here. While some of the original videos have since been removed, these posts claimed that the clip was an example of the late Dr. Moumita recording her final moments and sending them to her mother. However, we found no international media report of such a video being sent to Moumita's mother.

Although several users have also highlighted the viral video which is unrelated to this, we have not been able to identify the source of the video. It appears to be a staged scene and not a recording of the victim. On closer inspection, the face of the victim of this tragic incident, the late Dr. Moumita Debnath, also does not seem to match that of the girl in the viral video.

While the video appears to recreate the pain Dr. Moumita endured in her final moments, its visual and thematic content corresponds to scenes from a fictional production taken out of context to deceive the public.

Police findings:

According to Kolkata Police, the doctor's body was discovered in a brutal condition on the hospital premises. Given the severity of her injuries and the circumstances of her death, it is highly unlikely that she filmed herself during or after the attack. Click here to read more.

Impact of misleading representations and the tragic incident that sent shockwaves through the region:

The distribution of this misleading video has misled the public and increased the suffering of the victim's family and friends. The spread of such misinformation has the potential to hinder investigations and spread false narratives, affecting public understanding and the pursuit of justice.

The recent rape case of a doctor in Kolkata has shocked the nation and sparked widespread protests. The incident involved the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in postgraduate training at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Her body was found in a seminar room of the hospital on August 9, 2024.

The accused, Sanjay Roy, a volunteer with the Kolkata Police Disaster Response Squad, was arrested after CCTV footage and other evidence linked him to the crime. On the night of the incident, he reportedly drank alcohol with a relative of a patient before entering the seminar room where the victim was resting. After committing the crime, he was seen leaving the premises at around 4:30 am. After his arrest, he confessed to the crime.

This incident sparked massive protests from the medical community demanding justice and better safety measures. The protests also highlighted alleged negligence of the hospital administration and safety lapses, which led to the suspension of several hospital staff. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) and other medical associations have staged strikes in response to the incident.

In addition to the protests in India, the case has also attracted international attention. Solidarity rallies have been held in countries such as Bangladesh. The West Bengal government, led by the Trinamool Congress, has been heavily criticised for its handling of the situation, with some accusing the authorities of trying to cover up the incident.

The investigation is ongoing and the accused is currently in police custody. Further details on the tragic incident can be found here.
