Two dead and two injured in shooting; shooter still at large

OAKLAND – Two people were killed and two others injured in a shooting in East Oakland Saturday morning, authorities said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 9 a.m. in front of an apartment complex in the 1600 block of 83rd Avenue, not far from International Boulevard.

A man and a woman were found dead by police outside the complex. Two other women were injured and taken to hospitals. Their condition was unknown.

Authorities believe the shooter was the suspect and that he was not in custody at 1:00 p.m.

While the investigation was ongoing, police cordoned off the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Holly Street in Oakland.

“We were inside when we heard the shots – bang bang bang,” said Rodrigo Argueta, who lives near the corner of 83rd Avenue and Holly Street. “I heard four shots, and then they stopped. Then four more shots.”

He said the shooting occurred very close to the house where he has lived with his wife for 33 years.

“When we heard the shots, we didn't know what to do. We didn't know if we had to lie down on the ground,” said his wife Maria Argueta.

The killings are the 58th and 59th homicides investigated by Oakland police this year. Police were investigating 67 homicides at this time last year.

A $30,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the shooter. Anyone with information can contact police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950.
