Newark police investigate shooting in Central Ward

Newark Police are currently investigating a shooting incident that occurred Saturday night in the Central Ward.Reports of gunfire near 291 18th Avenue were received around 9:45 p.m. and required an immediate police response.

When police arrived, they discovered several cartridge cases scattered around the area.

The area was immediately secured and the Newark Shooting Response Team was called in to assist with the investigation. So far, no injuries have been directly linked to the crime scene.

However, a similar development occurred around 1 a.m. when a gunshot victim arrived at Beth Israel Hospital claiming to have been shot in Irvington.

Authorities are currently reviewing his statement to determine a possible connection to the earlier shooting in Newark.

The investigation is ongoing and police have not yet confirmed the exact location of the shooting, which the hospital said occurred.
