Steelers' Justin Fields has a viral outburst that will shake Russell Wilson

The Pittsburgh Steelers' battle for starting quarterback between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields took a turn for the worse on Saturday as the team lost 9-3 to the Buffalo Bills in the preseason. However, if either of the two played better than the other, it was probably Fields, possibly due to a play during the battle.

With over five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Fields had the best play of the night for the Steelers offense, showing off his exciting escape when he was under a lot of pressure and looked like he was going to be sacked but escaped. He then rolled to his left and made an impressive throw on the run, completing the pass to Dez Fitzpatrick for 19 yards.

On the night, Fields threw for 92 yards and completed 11 of his 17 passes, with no touchdowns or interceptions, one sack, a 78.6 quarterback rating and 42 yards on the ground. The former first-round pick, who is seeking a fresh start with Pittsburgh, spoke about his dual-threat ability after the game and discussed his mindset, according to ESPN.

“I'm just out there playing football,” Fields said. “At the end of the day, if I can run a little bit more, then that's what I need to do. But I don't go into games thinking, 'Oh, I need to run a lot more or show my legs more.' I just react and play football.”

Justin Fields “has improved in some areas,” said Steelers coach Mike Tomlin

Despite the Steelers' overall disappointing performance, Fields was the quarterback who managed the only field goal on the offensive. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin said the 25-year-old has “gotten better in some areas.”

“I think he's gotten better in some areas,” Tomlin said of Fields. “I think he's used his legs well, whether spontaneously or not, to keep some situations alive.”

Wilson, on the other hand, has completed eight of 10 passes for 47 yards and posted a quarterback rating of 86.2, but the offensive line has done him no favors as he has been sacked three times for a loss of 21 yards. Tomlin himself would call it an “incomplete case study” and that they need to protect the quarterback better, but Wilson talked about his comeback from his calf injury.

“I felt strong,” Wilson said. “When you get hurt, sometimes you worry, but that's in the back of your mind. I haven't felt that at all in the last week or so. And I've felt really good in the last week and otherwise. And to play out there tonight and just perform in the black and gold again was really cool.”

“I think the best thing I can do personally is stay consistent with my approach,” Wilson said. “I had a little issue with my calf. But the best thing is that I was out there tonight and played. … And I know what I can do when I'm 100 percent. I'm close.”

The Steelers’ next preseason game will be next Saturday against the Detroit Lions.
