Artificial intelligence influences applications

Date

(MENAFN) Nearly half of all job seekers now use generative AI tools, such as those found in chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, to help them with their job applications. This trend has led to an influx of applications, often of lower quality, into the job market, overwhelming employers and recruiters. The use of AI in the creation of resumes, cover letters and assessments has become common practice, with estimates suggesting that up to 50 percent of applicants use these tools. According to Khati Sundaram, CEO of recruitment platform Applied, the proliferation of AI in applications has effectively doubled the number of candidates for each job, while decreasing overall quality, making the process of sifting through applications more difficult.

The increased use of AI tools comes at a time when job markets, particularly in the US and Europe, are tighter. This has led to a surge in applications as individuals look for new opportunities following layoffs and fewer available positions. The proliferation of online job posting platforms has further expanded the applicant pool by making job openings more accessible and simplifying the application process. A survey conducted by HR startup Beamery found that around 46 percent of UK jobseekers use generative AI for their job search and applications, while a global survey by Canva found that 45 percent of jobseekers use AI to enhance their CV.

Andy Hayes, regional managing director of UK-based technology recruitment firm Harvey Nash, notes that recruiters are increasingly able to identify AI-generated content using subtle indicators such as unnatural grammar or overly polite language. This growing trend highlights the need for employers to adapt to the changing landscape of applications influenced by AI technologies.
