Jessica Wongso, convicted of murdering iced coffee, released on parole

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Ministry of Law and Human Rights announced on Sunday that Jessica Kumala Wongso, who was convicted in the Wayan Mirna Salihin murder case, was released on parole.

“The inmate, named Jessica Kumala Wongso, was granted conditional release based on the Decree of the Minister of Law and Human Rights No: PAS-1703.PK.05.09 of 2024,” the Directorate General’s Public Relations Officer Deddy Eduar Eka Saputra said in a statement.

This decision is in line with the Minister of Law and Human Rights' Order No. 7 of 2022, which sets out the conditions and procedures for granting parole, assimilation, family visitation leave, probation, pre-release leave and conditional leave.

As a parolee, Wongso will remain under supervision until March 27, 2032. She has been in prison since June 30, 2016 for violating Article 340 of the Penal Code. The Supreme Court sentenced her to 20 years in prison in June 2017.

Wongso served her sentence at Jakarta's Class IIA Women's Penitentiary. “While serving her sentence, Wongso conducted herself appropriately according to the prisoner counseling evaluation system and received a total of 58 months and 30 days of pardon,” Saputra said.

Wongso was convicted of the murder of Wayan Mirna Salihin in January 2016. Mirna died after drinking poisoned coffee ordered by Wongso at a Jakarta cafe.

Wongso was arrested in January 2016, found guilty in October of the same year and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Subsequent appeals were rejected.
