Oscar Piastri gives update on mysterious mid-season injury as F1 summer break ends

The mysterious rib injury that Oscar Piastri sustained in recent weeks will not hamper the Australian driver in the second half of the F1 season.

The Hungarian Grand Prix winner recently revealed that he had sustained a rib injury, but that it had not affected his on-track performance ahead of F1's summer break.

Oscar Piastri is “sunny and healed” for his return to Formula 1

During the summer break, Piastri revealed that he had suffered a fractured rib during the summer, casually mentioning this fact in a social media post reflecting on an action-packed few weeks of European summer racing.

“The first part of the season is over,” he wrote, sharing pictures from various races from the first half of the year, including his first Grand Prix victory in Hungary.

“First GP victory,” he said, before dropping the bombshell and showing an X-ray that clearly showed a broken bone, including a broken rib.

“First broken bone,” he said casually, “the rib is enjoying the break.”

It is unclear how Piastri sustained the injury. The 23-year-old did not want to reveal this detail and continued his vacation with his girlfriend.

When asked for comment, McLaren confirmed that the injury had occurred, but again, no further details were given as to how it occurred.

“He sustained the injury in Austria, but has now fully healed,” said a spokesman PlanetF1.com.

The date on the X-ray revealed that Piastri had his injury examined on Monday morning, immediately after the British Grand Prix, in which the Australian had finished fourth.

On the final weekend before flying to Zandvoort to continue the second half of the season, Piastri took to social media again, sharing pictures of himself on holiday and saying he felt refreshed and ready for the second half of the year.

“Sun dried and cured,” he said, “ready for more racing cars.”

In the social media post, Piastri shared photos of himself on vacation with his longtime girlfriend Lily Zneimer, who he has been with for several years.

The couple had been visiting Montenegro and the Bay of Kotor and shared pictures of their activities, visiting local landmarks such as Our Lady of the Rocks, strolling through the picturesque streets, eating delicious dishes and – most importantly for the McLaren Formula 1 driver – getting some exercise on the tennis court.
